NAME

OCTAVE kvKVMBscan.m - Kelvin-Voigt (KV) to Kelvin-Voigt-Maxwell-Biot (KVMB) Damping Ratio Plot

SYNOPSIS

kvKVMBscan prompts for:

User enters water mass and frame mass (the ratio depends on porosity) (GUI Entry Box)
X-prompt to use mouse to place Mf/Mw ratio label on plot
X-prompt to continue and add another plot, or to quit.
Plots can be saved using the GUI interface in the plot menu.

DESCRIPTION

Basic Seismic Utilities (BSU) program run in Octave or Matlab. Within an octave session, type kvKVMBscan and a GUI pops up as shown above. The mapping between the KVMB and KV constitutive representations depends on pore diameter, porosity, frequency, and viscosity of fluid. Setting the Frame to Water masses follows from porosity. Examine the code for other assumptions. Reference: Michaels (2006) "Relating Damping to Soil Permeability" Vol. 6, No. 3, International Journal of Geomechanics, ASCE p. 158-165.

INPUT

GUI Entry box as given above.

OUTPUT

Plot of KVMB vs KV damping ratio for given frame:water mass ratio.
